UNICO Delaware honors student athletes

The 7th Annual Brian Piccolo Award Ceremony and luncheon held at Saint Edmond Parish Hall on Sunday, November 10th, granted two $1000 donations to the Cape Henlopen softball and women’s basketball teams, via the dedication and loyalty of teammates Isabella Conte (softball) and Abbey Hearn (women’s basketball).

Each young woman received a plaque, donated by Mr. and Mrs. Nick DelCampo and Patty Derrick, to commemorate this honor, and many other gifts given by UNICO and local merchants.

The keynote speaker, Deacon David McDowell, a former educator and coach, captivated the attendees with his dynamic voice and presentation. He congratulated the winners on their spirit of teamwork, courage and anti-bias, in the “true spirit of Brain Piccolo”.

The luncheon, prepared and served by members of UNICO, featured Italian specialties which coaxed everyone to enjoy second and third helpings.
All Delaware-Sussex County senior athletes of Italian heritage are encouraged each year to apply for this national award given by chapters of UNICO to win $1000 for their team and to gain the right to add this honor to their list of achievements when applying for acceptance to institutions of higher learning or employment.

UNICO (UNITY, NEIGHBORLINESS, INTEGRITY, CHARITY and OPPORTUNITY) is the largest Italian American service organization in the United States with the goals of charitable giving, community service and the preservation of Italian culture.
